MIN203: Urban Youth Ministry

Course Description

This course will examine the urban context and the church's opportunity for successful and sustainable youth programs that earn the right to have a transformative impact on youth, families, and social and community systems. Students will be introduced to the theory and practice of holistic youth development. This course will combine cultural relevance for effective youth ministry with practical steps to enable the student to build a comprehensive plan for an urban youth ministry.

Course Outcomes

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  1. Articulate a vision and philosophy of urban youth ministry.
  2. Identify needs and focus areas for your youth ministry based on 40 youth developmental assets and other models.
  3. Develop youth ministry programs for each five tiers in the Purpose Driven Youth Ministry model: Community, Crowd, Congregation, Committed and Core.
  4. Design a plan to recruit and support youth ministry leaders.
  5. Develop a plan for ensuring your youth ministry stays healthy in the long-term.
  6. Create a comprehensive plan for your youth ministry synthesizing all learning from the course.

Degree Program Outcomes

Degree outcomes are the overall skills and knowledge we expect you will have after successfully completing a degree program at City Vision University.   1. Bible. Use sound principles of Biblical interpretation to analyze the structure, themes and content of the Bible and apply that to local contexts.
  2. Theology. Apply the foundational truths of Christian theology grounded in Scripture to local contexts.
  3. Calling. Create a synthesis of a reflective life vision and plan to enable 24/7 ministry based on God’s purposes for work and their own unique calling.
  4. Leadership. Develop a personal philosophy and plan for leadership based on principles of leadership and effective ministry management.*
  5. Life Balance. Develop plan for him/herself and others to establish life balance in a society saturated with technology and addiction. 
  6. Cross-Cultural Ministry. Develop strategy for effective cross-cultural management and ministry and apply that to their own organizational or ministry context. (BA only)*
  7. Specialization. Develop skills and apply learning and concepts in one area of specialty ministry.
